INCLUSIVE TRAINING FOR THE DEAF COMMUNITY

WRITTEN BY: ISHMAEL ESPINAL (OWNER OF CYRUS THE GYM; B.A. KINESIOLOGY; OVER 10 YEARS PERSONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE - POWERLIFTING AND WEIGHTLIFTING COACH)

I grew passionate about learning American Sign Language after taking my Special Populations class at UTEP. My professor provided us with the simplest tools, but it made all the difference. It triggered something in me that made me want to learn the language, the culture and eventually become fluent. Thanks to two former co workers of mine that were at the EPCC Interpreter Preparation program at the time we worked together. They taught me a lot. They guided me to an instructor at UTEP that was conducting a course during the summer. That class helped spring me forward into learning more and applying ASL to my everyday routine.

I have always wanted to build a program where members of the deaf community can participate in healthy and safe exercise with diligent instruction and not feel a barrier in communicating their goals or concerns with their personal trainer. Communication is key to both sides for building an effective health program. I feel that my knowledge of exercise combined with my communication skills is the best place for members of the deaf community to feel welcome to start their fitness journey.
